Nokia announced today that Telecom Egypt has adopted Nokia's Photonic Service Engine (PSE) technology to double the capacity of its backbone on its DWDM backbone network in the Delta region. The commercial roll-out of the new high-speed service began in June and represents the first 200G long-haul single-carrier transmission service in Africa.
Faced with growing demand for mobile video services and very high speed services, Telecom Egypt worked closely with its partner Nokia to upgrade its existing Nokia 1830 PSS backbone. Increased network capacity provides broadband broadband services to fixed customers, as well as higher data rates for LTE mobile subscribers. Upgrading its existing Nokia PSS 1830 switches with Nokia's PSE technology enables Telecom Egypt to double its capacity while reducing operating costs.
Telecom Egypt is upgrading its backbone network with the help of the Nokia 500G DWDM Muxponder, a programmable card offering wavelength capabilities of 50G to 250G per line port. Based on Nokia's consistent Photonic Service Engine (PSE) digital signal processor, this programmability will enable Telecom Egypt to provide and adjust optical wavelength capacity for its network to be exploited for performance, capabilities and optimal costs per gigabit.
Ahmed El-Beheiry, chief executive officer and chief executive officer of Telecom Egypt, said: "Doubling the capacity of our existing backbone allows us to offer broadband and broadband LTE services to mobile operators in addition to 100GE services while reducing costs. As a long-time partner, we are confident that Nokia's proven optical network technology will help us maintain our leadership position by providing our customers with the latest and greatest technology solutions.
Amr El-Leithy, head of MEA Market for Nokia, said: "We are proud to be part of this innovative agreement for the continent. We have a long-standing partnership with Telecom Egypt and are pleased to see growing demand for their broadband and LTE services. That's exactly what we had in mind when we designed the 1830 PSS platform. Its flexibility and ease of evolution will allow them to proactively manage the data explosion and develop new revenue streams, while enhancing the experience of their customers. "
