Collider presented a projection of Avengers: war in the infinite last night, with the directors Joe and Anthony Russo waiting. All that led to the projection seemed to focus on the fact that the Avengers 4 title or trailer would fall. Spoiler: no more. But the Russo brothers participated in a Q & A session during which they answered questions about War of Infinity, and more.
Our own Peter Sciretta was present and reported the following information. We compiled what we learned during Russo Brothers' questions and answers. Thanks to Collider for the invitation.
The mandalorian
The Russo brothers recently visited the decor of the Star wars Disney Series + The mandalorian, where they found the former director of the MCU (and the current MCU actor) Jon Favreau. While the Russo were warned on specific details about the series, they congratulated Favreau and claimed that the series "was shot in a manner unlike any other television series".
Infinity War Shooting and Avengers 4 Back to Back
The initial plan was to shoot at once War of Infinity and Avengers 4 back to back, but the stories have become too complex. The Russo have finally decided to treat the two films separately because they are very different. As a result, the decision was made a few months later to shoot them back to back rather than competing. This led the crews at the production meetings to be increasingly confused about the scene in which the film was, which hindered the preparatory work.
Wrong scripts, new writings and unused narrations
None of the actors of War of Infinity actually had the entire script. Individuals who were in the film more than others had access to their scenes and knew more than others, but in the end, the whole scenario remained a little mysterious. In addition to all this, there were also fake scenes and scenes written to protect the secret – one of these fake scenes involved Gamora projecting Thanos from the cliff into the Soul Stone sequence instead of the other way around.
There were finally three different drafts of War of infinity. A draft had Thanos as narrator of the film, was of nonlinear structure and had antecedents for the order of the Blacks. This script ran about 250 pages. Although the narration was not included in the final film, his writing helped him to better understand the character.
Another version of the script opened after Thanos got the Power Stone, but he felt like he had too many Infinity stones to start with. So, it was instead decided to open with the attack on the ship, in the middle of his plane
As the script progressed, the plot was simplified, made more linear and allowed more moments to be passed through the characters. The Russo had what they thought was a very tight scenario at the beginning of production, but was very open during filming and changed some things on the set.
Thanos is smarter than Hulk and Loki is definitely dead (maybe)
Another theory that emerges from this scene is that Loki disguises himself as a Banner to escape (Loki can change form, after all). But no, this is not the case according to the Russos. In their final words, "Loki is dead." Of course, in the past, the Russo also said that all the dead in War of Infinity are final and we all know that there is no way to say it.
Turning and editing
The shooting schedule for War of Infinity was complicated – but not so complicated that it led to creative changes. Instead, it simply made the filming scenes a bit more difficult and required workarounds. For example: one side of a scene would be shot with a substitute and months later, the same scene would be shot from the other side with the other actor.
Captain America: the winter soldier and Captain America: Civil War have both been shot down with mainly three camera configurations, while War of Infinity was mainly filmed with a camera configuration. The three cameras facilitated the appearance of truth of the Captain America films but the Russos wanted War of Infinity to look bigger.
While working on television, the Russo brothers learned that they like to move fast and try a lot of things – and they adopted that mentality in the editing room of their MCU films. They edit many versions of a scene, structured in different ways. They also do something they call "screen f'n", where, once the film structure is set, they start to delete the footage from the shots and try to speed up the movie. In addition to all this, the Russo are trying to do things right in the scripting process, and that's why there are not many deleted scenes in their Blu-ray versions. As the Russo say, they are very satisfied with the latest results of their films and consider them as cuts of the director.
That said, the Russo explored other ideas for the final plan. But Thanos had the idea very early to smile at sunset, when they understood that it was the film of Thanos. He served an idea bigger than him, and that's why Thanos is a hero in his mind.
Stormbreaker
Stormbreaker, the weapon that Thor uses in the end, is it more powerful than the Gauntlet of Infinity? Not really, at least according to the Russos. Their explanation is that Thanos did not know what would happen when Thor attacked him with Stormbreaker, and if he did, he could have used the stones to react better.
Red Skull? More like dead Skull!
A surprise in War of Infinity involved the return of Red Skull for the first time since Captain America: the first avenger. As the Russos say, the character is traveling since the events of Captain America. He is now a slave to stones, and it's a ghost (hard blow). The Russo thought of using someone other than Red Skull in this scene, but they kept coming back to the character. Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote First Avenger, fought for the character's appearance.
While Red Skull is back, the actor who played it originally – Hugo Weaving – is not. The weaving was recorded in the past saying that he had no desire to return to the MCU, but the Russo say that he was asked to come back and take over the role. They would not go deeper, but it's safe to say that Weaving said, "Thanks, but no thanks." Ross Marquand plays the character in War of Infinity.
The characters of Netflix Marvel
The Russo plan to involve the characters of Netflix Marvel – Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Daredevil – in War of Infinity, but it was finally considered too complicated to correlate the story between not only the other Marvel films in production, but also the television productions. In the end, everyone decided that the best way to tell the story was to keep it centered on the MCUs.
The Stan Lee Cameo
The late Stan Lee was always informed of his particular behavior just prior to his arrival at the shoot and never refused any of their cameos. Lee's joke on the set was: "Why do I always have only one line?"
Spidey and the Snap
The Russo brothers always knew what characters in War of Infinity they wanted to be dusted at the end of the movie after Thanos had snapped his fingers. Nevertheless, speaking as fans and non-directors, the brothers said Peter Parker / Spider-Man was the character they wanted to save.
Speaking of Spider Man, someone asked the Russo to remedy the timing difference Spider-Man: Homecoming. A title card in this movie defines the main events 8 years after the first Avengers movie, but that does not really correspond to Marvel's current timeline. The filmmakers gave a direct answer: they did not do Back home, and their own film is correct with respect to the timeline. Nuff said,
Marvel Land
Disney introduces Marvel-based land in their theme parks – "The new Super Hero theme park will begin recruiting visitors in 2020, with even more new experiences to follow. Spider-Man and the Avengers will join the Guardians of the Galaxy to form what will become a completely immersive superheroes universe, propitious to the evolution of the Disney California Adventure Park. Will the Russo have a role to play in this regard? The filmmakers' duo stated that they were in a room with the Disney Imagine, that they presented their movies and explained what was important to them, but that they did not actively participate in park rides. Disney. So no.
IMAX
The IMAX version of War of Infinity have not switched to personal video. Why? It's "complicated", but reading between the lines, it looks like it's partly an IMAX decision. The Russo said it did not mean that the IMAX version of the film would never be available on personal video. In other words, do not be surprised when you find yourself in front of a new Blu-ray player.
Beta Ray Bill
Beta Ray Bill, the first out of Marvel's Scandinavian universe, deemed worthy of brandishing the hammer of Thor, Mjolnir, and the owner of Stormbreaker in comics, has been mentioned several times as a possible character. But the Russo and the scriptwriters could never integrate it into the story. Honestly, it's good – War of Infinity has about 50,000 characters, so Beta Ray Bill can pass this one.
Favorite moments
The Russo brothers each have their favorite moments in War of Infinity. The epic came from Joe Russo, Thor, to Wakanda during the final battle. Anthony Russo, meanwhile, likes the emotional scene where Wanda is forced to destroy the Stone of Vision.
Diversity and strong points of view
When asked about the possibility of Latin American characters occupying the MCU, the Russo brothers responded that they did not want to spoil anything, but that they thought the MCU would continue to diversify . This is a painfully vague answer and, even though I no longer want to offer spoilers, this seems to me too tasteless and hopefully they would have provided something more concrete. The Russo also said that Marvel was looking for "directors with a strong point of view, different from what they think."
Winter Soldier and Falcon
There have been TV series stories derived from Winter Soldier and Falcon for the upcoming Disney + streaming service, but if that happens, the Russo brothers are not involved. That's not to say that it's do not happening – just that filmmakers have nothing to do with it.
What is the problem with the soul stone
Do you have questions about the stone of soul? The Russos have answers! Kind of. In their own words, the stone of souls has the ability to "manipulate your soul and your essence of who you are". Thanos uses the Stone of Souls to fire Dr. Strange from his own body in the scene where Strange is multiplying. Thanos also uses the soul stone to talk to Gamora.
Thanos is probably a liar
At some point in War of InfinityThanos said that all the children on the planet Gamora "eat well" after the purge, but Guardians of the GalaxyGamora said she was the last of her race. Is it a blunder? A hole in the ground? A big blunder? Not according to Russo. Asked about this potential mistake, they said, "Who do you think, Thanos or Gamora?" In other words: Thanos is a madman who wants to wipe out half of the universe. may be do not take it at your word.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was all ready to increase production, then all hell broke the loss. Screenwriter-director James Gunn was fired by Disney because of violent reactions involving old offensive tweets. This casts doubt on the future of this franchise and, for the moment, it remains unresolved. But this wait was no problem with Avengers 4, according to the Russos, because the shooting of the film was already finished when Flight. 3 has been put on hold.
