Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston divorced in 2007

Whitney Houston's ex-husband, Bobby Brown, sued Showtime Networks and the BBC, alleging that unauthorized footage had been used in the 2017 Whitney documentary: Can I Be Me.

Brown and the estate of the couple's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, filed a complaint Wednesday at the US District Court in New York.

He claims that the pictures hurt Brown, his business and Bobbi Kristina's estate.

Showtime, the BBC and Brown's lawyer have not commented.

The R & B singer, Brown, said that her consent to use the images had not been given, adding that the material was about 15 years old. He was shot dead before Houston's divorce in 2007 and before his death in 2012.

The complaint stated: "Everyone should have the right to control the manner in which his or her identity, likeness, personality, voice, name or image is marketed by others".

The film, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, was also shown at Showtime and the BBC.

The complaint adds: "She relies on interviews with friends of Houston and people who knew her, as well as on archival footage."

Reuters reported that plaintiffs want at least $ 2 million (£ 1.5 million) for violation of their rights in advertising and misleading advertising, as well as an injunction against the distribution of the documentary.
