Caledonian Sleeper service disruption continues

The disruption of Caledonian Sleeper services will continue next week after the damage to the wheels of a train.

Some services between Edinburgh and London are canceled Sunday and Monday, Glasgow services being affected Tuesday and Wednesday.

Serco, who manages the bed, said the wheels had been damaged when the emergency brakes were activated Tuesday night.

The problems stem from the introduction of the new £ 150 million fleet, which started operating at the end of April.

A replacement bus picked up customers in the West Midlands early Wednesday morning, after emergency braking operated on a train bound for Scotland.

This meant that the wheels were dragged along the tracks, producing "punctures" where some of the metal wears through friction.

Since then, a number of services have been canceled and Caledonian Sleeper announced that the disruption would continue until Wednesday.

The canceled services are:

• Sunday service in London from Euston to Edinburgh
• Monday at Euston service from Edinburgh to London
• Tuesday service between London Euston and Glasgow Central
• Glasgow Wednesday at London Euston

Ryan Flaherty, managing director of Californian company Sleeper Sleeper Caledonian, said: "Many of our cars have remained flat after the emergency braking of the Lowlander service between London and Scotland on Tuesday night.

"As a result, we had to cancel a number of planned services during the repairs, we apologize to the affected customers and take steps to give them as much notice as possible.

"We are working hard to get cars back into service as soon as possible."

Passengers received a full refund. If they still need to spend the night, an alternative bus transport was organized.
