BEIJING (Reuters) – The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture said on Sunday that a new outbreak of African swine fever had been confirmed in Gansu province in the north-west of the country.

The outbreak occurred on a farm of 109 live pigs in Qingyang City. It infected 44 animals and killed nine, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said in a statement.

China, home to the largest herd of pigs in the world, has reported more than 90 cases of this highly contagious disease since its discovery in the north-east of the country last August. This is the first case in Gansu listed on the ministry's website.
