China's belt and road projects must be welcomed – and worried

[ad_1]

SHUNNING all false modesty, the head of China, Xi Jinping, calls his idea the "project of the century". The country's media hail it as a gift of "Chinese wisdom" for the development of the world. As for the true meaning of the clumsy metaphor for describing it, the debate on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is raging.

The term itself is confused. The "road" refers mainly to a sea route; the "belt" is on earth. Countries seeking funding from China consider it a source of investment in infrastructure between China and Europe via the Middle East and Africa. Those who fear China see it as a sinister project to create a new world order in which China is the preeminent power.
