Comedy Central Order Awkwafina, Rory Scovel Projects – Series – Variety

Awkwafina and Rory Scovel both recorded serial orders for projects set up at Comedy Central.

The cable company has ordered 10 episodes of the eponymous series "Awkwafina", a half-hour scripted series starring the writer, actor and rapper. In the series, she will play a 20-something year in Queens, fighting for a larger-than-life existence while living with her father and grandmother.

Awkwafina will be alongside Bowen Yang as Awkwafina's cousin, BD Wong for father and Lori Tan Chinn as grandmother. Awkwafina, Karey Dornetto and Teresa Hsiao wrote the pilot led by Lucia Aniello.

Awkwafina, Dornetto, Aniello, Dornetto, Peter Principato and Itay Reiss from Artists First, executive product. Hsiao is co-executive producer. Monika Zielinska, Adam Londy and Rachel Olson are the people responsible for the show for Comedy Central.

"I've been watching Comedy Central since I was old enough to hold a remote, and many of their shows have defined who I am today," said Awkwafina. "I am so honored to be able to give their platform the opportunity to tell the story of an American of Asian descent in the context of the city in which I was raised."

The Scovel project, entitled "Robbie", received an order for eight half-hour episodes. Scovel is the basketball coach of the youth league of a small town that lives in the shadow of his father, until he realizes he has a son who can lead him to the magnitude. Beau Bridges, Sasheer Zamata and Mary Holland are also on the bill.

Scovel wrote the series with Anthony King. Scovel, King and Scott Moran are executive producers. Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Betsy Koch and Owen Burke are executive producers of Gary Sanchez Productions. Monika Zielinska and Rachel Olson are responsible for Comedy Central.
