Cooperation with Africa does not have an imperial conception, China reassures

Zhou Yuxiao, Ambassador for the China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC) of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, reiterated recently in an interview on the sidelines of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) dialogue with African parties. The ambassador explained that he had learned of the existence of Africa across Zambia and Tanzania when China was building the Tazara railway, adding that China had financed the project to support freedom movements and fight against colonialism. He said that if China wanted to colonize Africa, it would have done it 50 years ago during the construction of the railway and not today. Yuxiao said the claims were coming now because China was doing so much in Africa.

The ambassador explained that there were countries that wanted to spread propaganda because they do not want to see China and African countries become friends.

"They are not happy to see such relationships," he said.

He added that the cooperation had 10 areas to cover, including industrialization, agricultural modernization, financing of green development and cultural exchanges.
