Corning unveiled Gorilla Glass 6 as a brand new glass protection for mobile devices. As a successor to Gorilla Glass 5 that was launched in July 2016, the new development is designed to be designed with an "entirely new material" that can withstand several drops. The New York-based company stresses that the new glass protection is its most durable protective glass to date. Although the company did not disclose devices featuring the new glass panel, he confirmed that the latest creation is currently being evaluated by multiple customers – suggesting its debut in the coming months. The next-generation Galaxy Note, due to arrive on Aug. 9, could become the first device with Gorilla Glass 6.

In its laboratory tests, Corning claims that Gorilla Glass 6 has survived to 15 drops of 1 meter high on Gorilla Glass 5. The company used a new glass composition to make the Gorilla Glass version cool able to withstand several drops. "Gorilla Glass 6 is an entirely new glass composition that can be chemically enhanced to give it significantly higher compression levels than with Gorilla Glass 5," said Jaymin Amin, vice president of technology and development of products at Corning Gorilla Glass. Corning Specialty Materials, in a press release at the announcement of the new panel. "This allows Gorilla Glass 6 to be more resistant to damage, and since falls failures are a probabilistic event, the added compression on average increases the probability of survival through multiple fall events."

Durability, Gorilla Glass 6 is designed with optimized optical clarity, touch sensitivity, scratch resistance, efficient wireless charging and increased durability to adapt to modern design trends. Corning believes that modern smartphone designs use glass for more than 85% of the enclosure. "With both aesthetic and performance benefits, glass is on the right side of the technology curve and will continue to be the material of choice for mobile consumer electronics," said Scott Forester. , Division Vice President, Marketing Products and Innovation, Corning Gorilla Glass, in the statement.

Corning claims that Gorilla Glass 6 should "reach the market in the coming months". While the list of devices with the panel has not yet been revealed, the Galaxy Note 9 is expected to be the first model with the latest Gorilla Glass panel. Back in 2016, Samsung brought the Galaxy Note 7 as the first device to Gorilla Glass 5.
