Q: You have the rare distinction of being an actor which was both in the Marvel Universe and the DC Universe (Nolan Universe). What are the similarities and differences?

There are all kinds of differences. The first comic books I started to read were Detective Comics [DC] which had a dark and rough nature. In third year, I started my first collection – the West Coast Avengers – which were just extraordinary characters. And then, I entered The Avengers. You get these colors brighter, stories where you are dealing with many more supernatural and cosmic elements than in the comics universe. In the Marvel Universe, I found my favorite heroes. In the DC universe, I found my favorite bad guys.

I was so lucky and lucky to be apart from Christopher Nolan's trip to the Batman universe with The Dark Knight. I played a character who was in league with the Joker who is one of the greatest villains of all time. Nolan captured the tone, hardness and visceral nature of Frank Miller's world. And do not forget the importance of The Long Halloween for this film too. He brought it perfectly to the screen.

It was in 2008 and it even started me. Then I went out to Los Angeles with this credit to my credit. And so when I became a part of Ant-Man, I just panicked!

What has happened in the last ten years in the film world of Marvel [MCU] is the history of cinema. What Kevin Feige and the entire team at Marvel Studios did, is to give life to the same tone and energy as when I started reading Marvel comics. members of the West Coast Avengers that I read. And oh man, he was one of my favorite characters. He was such a crazy, strange, interesting and unique being who had this incredible spirit and access to this amazing technology and particles that had supernatural abilities. But he was just a guy and I can not believe I'm involved in telling the story. It's the story of Scott Lange obviously, but Hank Pym is an important part of it.

The film has Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Laurence Fishburne and Michelle Pfeiffer. But what is it that playing with TI?

I like working with TI but I was not aware of its importance in the music world and of culture before starting to work together. When I was screened and I found out who the rest of the cast was, I told my wife, "Oh, it looks like I have a lot of scenes with Paul Rudd. , Michael Peña and TI " And she was so excited about T.I. It was just a Google search and I'm like: God, I'm about to work with a legend.

T.I. is incredibly prolific. He has three cell phones – one for each of his businesses. He has music, writing, and then comedy.

One of the things I love about TI – our trailers were one beside the other – he had always had a full house because his family was with him all the time. I try to bring my family when I go too. It was really fun to bond with a legend of hip-hop and entertainment and go out as a couple of dads.

I see you have a background in theater, specifically in Chicago. I'm curious, what attracted you there instead of Los Angeles or New York?

I grew up in Kansas, and then I had the opportunity to study theater at the DePaul University Theater School. So I moved to Chicago and it was my first real formal training. It was such an immersive experience.

When I finished school, I actually had a few years – it's common knowledge – but I struggled. I had a difficult battle with addiction and I cleaned myself up in 2002. I was very scared to start playing again. But all I could think about and dream about was to start an acting career.

Fortunately, the friends I'd known in the theatrical scene encouraged me to come back on stage. I had really wonderful concerts. I've worked with Shattered Globe Theater, Writer's Theater and all those incredible Chicago theaters. I was doing a production of Othello at the Writer's Theater and I had the opportunity to audition for The Dark Knight who then had a secret title

I went in a cattle call and everyone was reading the scene for the burglary of the opening bank. The casting director, John Papsidera, brought me back the next day. I met Christopher Nolan in a small room and I read this scene of fake facets for him. I thought I did not have the role. I was devastated.

I came back and had a great time working on Othello 's production. And then in July, just the day of my birthday, I received the call that I was going to be part of the movie. They would never tell me what I was going to do. They just said that you were going to be the thug of a Joker and that you must be able to travel to London for certain scenes. My life has never been the same since, man.

I can not even imagine. And by the way, I saw this production of Othello. A friend of mine, LaShawn Banks continued for Othello.

Stop this. It's so great, man. And I love, LaShawn. And then Josh Schmidt our sound designer, I mean that he went on doing incredible things. This guy has released wazoo musicals.

Yes, he did it. I've known Josh for too long. How does your theater background prepare you for a role like Kurt in Ant-Man?

Part of the joy of what I have to do is become the character. The tools and techniques I've learned from the theater are no different. The only really different thing is when it comes to playing. All my preparation is the same. But instead of a performance surrounded by 100 or 500 seats in a theater, you must remember that it's as if you had a spectator. And they are sitting a few feet away from you next to the camera. There is no need to project anything. Depending on the positioning of the camera and the type of lens used and the way the director wants the photo to work, you can even remove it in a few clicks.

In addition to acting, you are also a writer?

When I was still waiting to see if I had the courage to go back to action, writing was my main creative outlet. I wrote the screenplay for a movie called Animals, which I made with my good friend Collin Schiffli. This was done in 2015. We played at SXSW and won the Jury Prize for Courage and Narration. It was bought by Oscilloscope Labs.

I wrote All Creatures Here Below a movie inspired by many personal things that I had been dealing with in my life. It mostly happens from where I come to Kansas. We shot it over a year ago now. It features the incredible Karen Gillan who delivered, I tell you, one of the best performances I've seen. I'm so excited for people to see what she's done with that.

But this film is currently discovering – hopefully – that we are in a festival or that we are going to land with a distribution company. I check every hour on my phone to see what updates are coming

Is there anything else you would like to share with me about Ant-Man?

I'm really proud to be part of a movie. If there was anyone who could surpass me or get me out of the comic book in a few moments on the set, it was Peyton Reed. He designed a movie about the importance of the family and the value we all share, no matter where we are socially or politically. And it does it in a way that takes us on an exciting, fun and exciting adventure. As a nerd, and as a fan of what's happening with the MCU, quantum field explorations are something that I think will really upset people's minds.
