"Immediately after my diagnoses, I focused on my goal and what I wanted out of life. "she says. "One of those things was advocacy: Cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable, and no one should have to experience what I've experienced."
Nielsen was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2011 and underwent a hysterectomy. In 2014, she was diagnosed with vaginal cancer. She has undergone cycles of chemotherapy and radiation while raising three children and continuing to teach HPU.
Today, she is again free of cancer and is working to prevent other women from developing cervical cancer. She gives public speeches for community groups on cervical and vaginal cancers, which she learned were not as often talked about as the others. types of cancer. It offered a comfortable setting where students could discuss cervical cancer and Nielsen could share their story with them.

"Another thing that I've embraced since my diagnoses is the sense of adventure," Nielsen says. I made a list of all the things and all the places I wanted to see and I strove to do them now instead of saying that I would get there. I want to take my family and friends on these adventures and encourage others, especially my children, to be action-oriented in their lives.
Nielsen climbs regularly with his outdoor enthusiast friends, many of whom will accompany him on the Mt. Kilimanjaro trip.
Mt. Kilimanjaro is his next step.
"A friend of mine who is a survivor of ovarian cancer has climbed the mountain and inspired me to do it too," says Nielsen. "My problem was that I had no one who wanted to come with me.After a few years of research, I convinced adventurous friends, including my oncologist, to accompany me."
