Leaders of the East African Community are due to meet Friday at Arusha headquarters during a regular meeting of the Heads of State Summit.

JUBA, November 29, 2018 [Gurtong]-The 20th regular meeting of the Summit will be preceded by the 38th regular meeting of the EAC Council of Ministers, to be held from 25 to 28 November 2018, also in Arusha, Tanzania.
Among the items on the provisional agenda of the 20th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the EAC are: the status of ratification of various protocols; the status of the resolution of non-tariff barriers that have been outstanding for a long time; the progress report on the adoption of the Political Confederation as a transitional model for the Political Federation of East Africa, according to the Community Secretariat of l. East Africa.
Other items on the agenda include: the road map for accelerated integration of the Republic of South Sudan into the EAC; the verification exercise of the admission of the Republic of Somalia to the Community.
The summit will also consider reports on modalities for the promotion of motor vehicle assembly in East Africa aimed at reducing the import of used vehicles into the Community, and; examination of the textile and leather sector with a view to developing a strong and competitive national sector offering consumers a better choice than imported textiles and footwear.
At their 19th Ordinary Meeting held in Kampala, Uganda on 23 February 2018, the Summit called on the EAC Council of Ministers to explore the possibilities of developing the automotive industry in Africa. Is by reducing the import of used vehicles from outside the region. the most competitive region.
The Summit, at the same meeting in Kampala, urged the Council to make the region more competitive by prioritizing the development of a competitive national textile and leather sector that will give East Africans a wider choice. affordable, new and quality clothing, shoes and other leather products.
The next summit will also review the progress report of the Council of Ministers on the Summit Directive on the appointment of two (2) Deputy Secretaries-General in the Community, recruited on a rotational basis from the Partner States.
The summit is expected to approve various bills passed by the East Legislative Assembly, namely: the EAC Polyethylene Materials Control Bill 2016; the draft law on the administration of the East African Court of Justice, 2018; the EAC Monetary Institutes Bill, 2018, and; the EAC Customs Management Bill (Amendment), 2018.
The summit will further examine the status of implementation of the EAC protocols on the customs union and the common market, in addition to the current financial situation of the Community.
