ISTANBUL (AP) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he spoke with Mesut Ozil after the midfielder retired to play in Germany. He denounces "the racist attitude" of Ozil.

Ozil announced his international retirement Sunday, a few weeks after the release of the first World Cup in Germany. He was criticized for posing for photos with Erdogan before the tournament and the Turkish elections.

Ozil criticized the German Football Federation, its president, its fans and the media for what he considered racism. He defended the meeting of Erdogan.

Erdogan told Turkish journalists that he spoke to Ozil on Monday. He said Tuesday that it is "really unacceptable that a young man who gave everything to the German national team and who contributed to his success is faced with such a racist attitude because of his religion".
