ADDIS-ABABA, June 19 (Xinhua) – The mayor of the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa Takele Uma, announced on Wednesday that a ban on the use of motorcycles would be in place in the city from 7 July, with the aim of reducing growing crime.

Addressing local journalists, Takele said criminals were using motorcycles to commit assaults and armed robberies in Addis Ababa neighborhoods.

"The administration of the city of Addis Ababa will ban the use of motorcycles in the city from July 7," Takele said.

"However, this ban will not affect licensed motorcycle operators, those who use motorcycles as postal media and motorcycles used by diplomatic missions," Takele said.

He also said that the ban on driving motorcycles had been in place in the city after a week-long study had revealed that many criminal activities were being conducted to help of motorcycles.

Takele also said that the city administration of Addis Ababa would impose a ban on travel by most cargo vehicles in the city during the day to reduce congestion that is increasing in the city.

Addis Ababa, a city of about 5 million and more, is generally considered a safe city for residents and expats.

However, the increasing number of violent crimes committed with motorcycles and cars has alarmed residents and officials.
