Yuzuru Hanyu, a two-time Olympic champion, will miss the Grand Prix of Figure Skating final due to a right ankle injury, the Japanese Skating Federation announced Thursday.
Hanyu, 23, has twisted his right ankle while training at the Rostelecom Cup on Nov. 17. He will not be able to compete in the Grand Prix Final December 6-8 in Vancouver, Canada.
The withdrawal of Hanyu means that Shoma Uno will be the only Japanese participant.
In addition to winning two gold medals and consecutive world championships, Hanyu won the Grand Prix final four times in a row between 2013 and 2016. He wanted to become the first skater, male or female, to win five titles at the GP.
The GP final will bring together the top six skaters in the International Skating Union's Grand Prix Series. Hanyu is qualified by winning the Helsinki Grand Prix and the Rostelecom Cup.
