Press Room (ADV) – Burundi is expected to vaccinate more than seven million citizens against meningitis, the equivalent of 77 percent of its total population, in December, the Burundian minister of health said on Monday.

A vaccination campaign against meningitis will take place from December 4th to 13th. Burundian citizens aged one to 30 will be vaccinated, said Thaddee Ndikumana, Burundian Minister of Public Health and AIDS Control, at a preparatory meeting for the campaign in Ngozi province, northern Burundi. .

He asked the administration, security forces and health sector actors to contribute to the next immunization campaign.

The last vaccination campaign against meningitis in Burundi took place in 1992, according to the Ministry of Health.

According to the World Health Organization, this country in Central Africa is one of the 26 countries in the Greater Meningitis Belt in sub-Saharan Africa that has the highest rates of disease.
