KATOWICE, Poland (AP) – A group of ecologists has settled in the chimney of the largest lignite power plant in Europe, in central Poland, to incite political leaders to action at the World Climate Summit that the country will hold next month.

Greenpeace activists climbed a 180-meter chimney in Belchatow to draw attention to the need to reduce the use of coal, one of the main causes of global warming.

The climate summit, to be held from 2 to 14 December, will bring together representatives from more than 190 nations in Katowice, in the heart of Silesia, a coalfield in southern Poland.

In Poland, Katowice shows how a coal mining center can be transformed into a modern, environmentally friendly city, with buildings and parks made of glass and metal and parks with old mines.
