The Greenpeace activists braved the freezing conditions as they remained at the top of a powerhouse chimney on the second day of their protest against Warsaw coal policy. It precedes the UN climate talks this weekend. The Belchatow power plant, run by the state, is the largest electricity producer in Poland and one of the largest coal power plants in the world.
"For many years, climate change was based on numbers and statistics, but also on the warming of the oceans and the melting of polar ice caps in the Arctic," said Joanna Sustento, a member of Greenpeace in the Philippines. "The consequences of climate change are distant or about to happen, but for us in the Philippines we are already experiencing the effects of climate change, and we are already suffering the consequences."
Last week, the Polish Ministry of Energy said in a draft document that by 2030, 60% of the electricity would come from coal and that the existing onshore wind farms will disappear.
