At the moment, Nairobi motorists are paying 300 shillings a day for parking after the fees have been increased by 140 hp in 2013.

Nairobi motorists will benefit from a reduction in parking fees starting next month after Governor Mike Sonko announced that he would reduce daily parking fees at Sh200.

Governor Sonko confirmed that the county treasury had already taken into account the reduced fees, which the city hall had proposed to raise to 400 shillings last month, in the county finance law, 2018, which sits currently at the county assembly.

"After consultations with various stakeholders, including neighborhood representatives, we agreed to reduce parking fees so as not to overload motorists," Governor Sonko said on Tuesday.

CONGESTION

He nevertheless indicated that his administration would review the fees after the completion of ongoing projects to reduce congestion in the central business district.

"I know this (reduced fees) will increase congestion in the city center, but we can not punish Nairobi residents either because projects such as the BRT and the construction of bus terminals outside of the CBD are still ongoing, "said the director of the town hall.

At present, Nairobi motorists are paying 300 shillings a day for parking after fees have been increased by 140 shillings in 2013 by the administration of former Governor Evans Kidero.
