Canadian author Margaret Atwood has confirmed that she is writing a sequel to The servant's tale. It will be called Wills.
In a message posted on Twitter, Atwood wrote: "Yes, indeed, to those who asked: I write a sequel to The #HandmaidsTale. #Wills takes place 15 years after the final scene of Offred and is told by three female characters. It will be published in September 2019. "
Above the message is a video that says, "Everything you've asked about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! L & # Another inspiration is the world in which we live. "
The servant's tale, published in 1985, will soon be in the fictitious Republic of Gilead, the theocratic state that overthrew the US government but suffers from a low birth rate.
As a result, fertile women – or "two-legged uterus" – are effectively enslaved and must have children for wealthy couples. These women, known as maidservants, are closely monitored by a secret police force and are for the most part forbidden to leave their homes.
The novel explores the oppression of women within a patriarchate and asks what impact this has on our society.
"Anyone who wants power will try to manipulate you by appealing to your desires and fears, and sometimes to your best instincts," says Atwood. "Women need to be a little cautious about this kind of appeal. What are we asked to give up?
