Nintendo released version 1.6 of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and has added the first new character to the game's grace since its original release. Once you have downloaded the update, you can play as a Breath of the Wild link, and you will also be able to mount a brand new DLC-themed motorcycle.
Link appeared for the first time in Mario Kart 8 via paid downloadable content released for the Wii U version of the game, but was included as standard when the game made its way to the Nintendo Switch in this excellent port.
However, this new version of Link swaps his traditional green tunic for the blue "champion tunic" that he wore in his latest solo adventure. He also seems to have changed his standard Sword Master for a guardian sword of the new game. Other than that, both runners seem to be identical.
You will also have access to Link's Master Cycle Zero, a motorcycle that has been added to Breath of the Wild via its second downloadable content. In the traditional Mario Kart fashion, you can mix and match these motorcycle parts with all the others that are already in the game.
Continuous Support?
Nintendo has only released a single Mario Kart game on each of its consoles, and that means you have to be ready to wait a long time between the new entries in the series.
Downloadable content could be an ideal way to fill gaps between games, but Nintendo has not shown signs that it plans to release more updates for the Switch input in Series.
Previous game updates were limited to bug fixes and balance adjustments, although version 1.5 added the possibility of using the Nintendo Labo Toy-Con Motorbike. Too bad, because the foundations of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are solid and we will continue to play as long as Nintendo is ready to add new titles and characters.
It will never even be version 1.7 of the game, but we've crossed our fingers that this is not the end of Nintendo's continued support for the game.
