Maize naturally tolerates some herbicides, by detoxifying chemicals before they cause damage. This is what allows farmers to spray in the fields a class of herbicides called HPPD inhibitors, which destroy weeds such as waterhemp and amaranth Palmer, while leaving the maize intact. But in more and more areas, the method fails. The waterhemp does not die.
