Moreno back for Spielbergs West Side Story

Rita Moreno, who played and won an Oscar for her work Anita Palacio in 1961 in "West Side Story", returns for the new film adaptation of the famous stage musical directed by Steven Spielberg.

Moreno will assume an original role based on the character of Doc, the owner of the convenience store where Tony worked. The character has been reinvented and expanded as Valentina.

Moreno declares in a statement: "Never, in my wildest dreams, have I seen myself revisit this fundamental work. And being invited by Steven Spielberg to participate is simply exciting! Then work with the brilliant playwright Tony Kushner – what a wonderful stew! I tingle.

Moreno will join Ansel Elgort in the project, which was chosen to play the role of Tony, co-founder of the Jets. Playwright Tony Kushner ("Lincoln"), winner of the Pulitzer Prize, wrote the new screenplay based on the 1957 Broadway musical of Arthur Laurents, Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein.

Filming begins next summer.
