NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited a village in Rwanda on Tuesday and donated 200 cows for an economic development project for the East African nation.

"Participating in a Transformation Project for Rwanda's Economic Development!", Said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Raveesh Kumar.

"PM @narendramodi donates 200 cows under #Girinka – A program of cow families per poor in Rweru village," said Kumar.

"Girinka is an ambitious project that provides nutritional and financial security to the poor."

Girinka is a social protection scheme of the Rwandan government personally supervised by President Paul Kagame.

The poorest families are government-endowed dairy cows, and the first female cow-born calf is gifted for the next, fostering fraternity and solidarity in the community.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Modi visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which honors the memory of more than one million Tutsis killed by the then Hutu majority government in 1994.

Modi reached Rwanda on Monday during the first leg of his five-day tour of Africa, which will also take him to Uganda and South Africa.

After delegation talks with Rwandan President Paul Kagame, India and Rwanda signed eight agreements, including in the areas of defense, agriculture and dairy production, trade and leather and related sectors.

Modi also announced that India would open a new High Commission in Rwanda in what can be seen as another manifestation of India's growing commitments with Africa.

The current High Commissioner of India in Rwanda is domiciled in Uganda.

Modi's visit is the first visit of the Prime Minister of India to Rwanda.

It is also his second visit to mainland Africa after visiting Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya in 2016.
