New electoral law provokes an uproar in Tunisia – Politics

(ANSAmed) – TUNISI, JUNE 20 – A new electoral law in Tunisia
continues to spark a heated debate, accused of being
"unconstitutional" and marking a "return to dictatorship".
The law was passed Tuesday by the Tunisian parliament
with 124 votes for about a month from the deadline of
registration of the candidate.

It sets strict criteria for those who want to introduce themselves
candidates for legislative and presidential elections
at the end of the year.

This criterion allegedly excludes many who have
announced that they will be running, especially the business man
Nabil Karoui – owner of a private TV channel criticizing the
government – which is ahead in the polls.
The law has been criticized as being unconstitutional and
immoral because, according to his critics, it was designed to exclude
most popular candidate in the polls – Karoui as well as
Ksais Saied University Professor and the Free Destourian Party (PDL)
director and lawyer Abir Moussi. (ANSAmed).
