The question of when Nvidia would launch its next generation of GPUs was recently discussed: we predicted this year a launch in the middle of the summer, but the CEO Jen-Hsun Huang apparently shot down this idea with his statement that the next generation of GPUs would not appear "for a long time". Then Nvidia shot In a previous discussion, it was planned to give on its next generation GPU to Hot Chips (also in August). But later rumors and some controversial NOA changes that have been circulating have both pointed to release later this summer and additional evidence to this effect has now emerged.
ExtremeTech is not bound by any NDA on this subject and is therefore free to cover this information.
The news comes by Overclockers3D. Gamer Meld, a YouTube channel, claims to have received an email from a GPU reseller containing information about the launch schedule of the new generation, which, as always, may or may not be accurate and must be made accordingly . A copy of the e-mail is below:
[19659007] The e-mail notes a launch date of 30/08/2018 for the GTX 1180, 9/30 for some variants of the GTX 1170 and a GTX 1180+, and 10/30 for the GTX 1160 as well as other card variants. Spread the pitch as this could make sense of some rumors of a recent refresh of AMD hardware at Q4, although this is supposed to be a 12nm change for Polaris with a slight increase in actual performance. The GPUs are built on TSMC's 12nm optimization of its 16nm technology (12nm sh should be considered a marketing term for TSMC and GlobalFoundries rather than a fundamentally new node). Then, given the strength of Maxwell's refresh of Nvidia on the same knot as the previous Kepler, Nvidia's fans are likely to feel rather comfortable with the idea of a new architecture without a reduction node.
is our estimate for this material, but it's still a guess. The shipment of a GPU as an anticipated 7nm product would however be a bold choice for Nvidia for several reasons. Over the past few years, we've seen smelters move to nanometers lower with SoCs for smartphones, and Apple is generally the leader in the field, even going so far as to claim that TSMC would be the first. on 7nm. We know that AMD also relies on 7nm at TSMC, but its Vega Machine Intelligence GPU is not expected before the end of this year (post-iPhone) and will also be available in markets that can afford to pay for advanced silicon. Finally, we have seen GPU vendors struggle with availability during node transitions, even when the nodes are not new. It took months for AMD and Nvidia to ship 14nm in volume, even though this process node had been deployed for smartphones for over a year before Nvidia shipped its first 14nm GPU
. now, but it is not impossible.
Past this point, expectations for the first new generation of Nvidia in two years are generally high. Fortunately, the new products of the company will be delivered.
