Dar es Salaam. President John Magufuli today received 35.4 kg of gold from a Kenyan delegation, which was seized in Kenya at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in February 2018.

The 35.34 kilograms worth 2 billion shillings of gold were handed over to the president by Kenya's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Monica Juma, who led a high-level delegation including Kenya's Noordin PDP Haji.

The gold had been smuggled through Mwanza Airport before being seized in Nairobi shortly before it could be shipped to the UAE.

Juma, accompanied by several Kenyan ministers and other senior officials, also handed the president 170 million shillings, or 176,000 Ksh, or 77,000 USD, which were stolen from the NBC Mwanga branch in 2004.

Speaking, President Magufuli congratulated his Kenyan counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta, for facilitating the return of gold and silver.

President Magufuli said that two cases involving gold and silver had already been filed in Mwanza and Kilimanjaro respectively in connection with the incidents.

The president revealed that the property restitution agreement had been reached when the two heads of state met recently in Chato.

"I want to remind Tanzanians that you can not commit a crime in Kenya and come and hide in Tanzania or vice versa … you will be caught," he said.

He also asked the country's security and defense organs to investigate the presence of officials who allegedly conspired by the culprit to smuggle gold.

Addressing President Magufuli by phone, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta assured his counterpart of further cooperation.

In another development, the president revealed that during their meeting, President Kenyatta had agreed to buy corn flour in Tanzania.

"President Kenyatta has expressed interest in buying corn in Tanzania and this time they will buy corn flour," said the president.
