The long quarrel between Qualcomm and Apple is it ending? According to recent comments from Steve Mollenkopf, CEO of Qualcomm. The two companies have been seeking LTE modem license fees and mobile device patents for more than a year, and none of them have shown any signs of decline.
However, we all know that there is back-and-forth communication between companies – even in a bitter and public conflict like the one between these two tech giants. In this spirit, Mollenkopf said the pair was about to reach agreement on all outstanding issues.
To put things in analogy with the sport, Mollenkopf went on to assert that the two companies were "in the fourth quarter of the match, not in the first quarter", while they were discussing with CNBC Jim Cramer.
While all this legal back and forth has continued, Apple has increasingly distanced itself from Qualcomm components. Its latest 2018 iPhones – the iPhone XR, the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max – all use a 4G LTE modem manufactured by Intel. Intel modems are also used in the LTE version of the 2018 iPad Pro family, and Apple would rely on the Intel 5G modems in its iPhone versions of 2020.
That said, Mollenkopf is confident that Qualcomm and Apple will be able to come back to the table for a future working relationship on communication chips. "It's an opportunity to be left behind or to be sure to be part of this new generation. We work of course with everyone. We would love to work with Apple.
"People who have embraced the new technology are doing the best. Of course, we try to provide that to everyone and there is an opportunity for every OEM. "
