Samsung's next big event is coming soon, and Note 9 is expected to make its official debut there. But Samsung could also reveal a new smartwatch, too.
It's been a while since Samsung had a new big watch. The Gear S3 arrived at the end of 2016, while a small sports model, the Samsung Gear Sport was launched last fall alongside the # 39, a thinner tracker, the Fit 2 Pro with many of the same features. It could also skip the pace of other hot watches this fall being announced before next Apple Watch and the expected Google Wear OS smartwatch .
August 9 is Samsung Unpacked 2018 in New York, and CNET will be there. Here's what we think we know about Samsung's next smartwatch so far.

A name change: Goodbye Gear, hello Galaxy?
Originally, we assumed that the watch would call the Samsung Gear S4, as a result of previous Samsung watches. But the latest reports say more and more that the name has gone to Samsung Galaxy Watch. It would integrate into the existing galaxy Samsung Galaxy products. (Does this mean that Samsung Gear VR would become Samsung Galaxy VR, too?)
Previous reports also suggested changing the name of Galaxy Watch, but in a watch running under the Google Wear operating system . Which brings us to another question …
Tizen, Google's Wear OS software … or both?
Samsung has followed its own smartwatch path with proprietary software, operating system and Tizen-based applications, operating independently of the ecosystem of the Google Wear Wear Watch (formerly Android Wear). The latest reports suggest that the Galaxy Watch will launch Tizen, in a new version 4.0.
But Samsung's previous rumors, known as the Ice Universe indicated that Samsung's watch would use the Google Wear operating system.
About Gear S4 (probably called Galaxy Watch) Based on Android Wear, 470mAh battery, PLP package, it should have a new UX interaction and blood pressure measurement.

What happens if the two rumors are right? There is a possibility that Samsung is preparing a version now, and another using the Google Wear operating system later.
This is not impossible, or even quite crazy. Samsung makes Windows 10 PCs, Google Chromebooks and Gear VR headsets running Oculus mobile software. He is not afraid to play with the operating systems of other companies. In addition, Samsung has done this before: It made one of the first Android Wear watches, Live Gear even making a Tizen-separated smartwatch on Samsung Gear 2 Google is expected to launch a new set of Wear OS watches revamped this fall, but these watches will have Qualcomm processors while Samsung watches could use Exynos processors manufactured by Samsung as the previous models .
Bixby on board
The AI of Samsung is on its phones and a growing halo of products, and it seems inevitable that it is also on the new Samsung watch. The SamMobile report of the Galaxy Watch running Tizen 4.0 also indicates that Bixby comes standard as a voice assistant of the watch. (Is it possible that the Google Assistant is also available?)
A similar size to that of Gear Sport last year
Droid Life noticed FCC files for the Galaxy watch that seem confirm a 1.2-inch screen, matching Samsung Gear S3, well sized last year, and smaller than the Samsung Gear S3.
The most likely result: The more ambitious set of Gear S3 could end up being thrown into a smaller and larger watch.
Better battery life?
Whether it's a bigger battery or a more efficient processor, expect the next Samsung smartwatch to improve past performance. Samsung's watches have done better than average, and the Gear S3 released in 2016 could already support several days of charging. But the Gear S3 is a big watch. Last year's Gear Sport has traded some features like the calling speaker for a smaller size. Samsung watches already have a follow-up sleep on board like Fitbit and Garmin watches do, but better battery life would still be useful.
The recent tweet from Ice Universe (above) claims that the new battery is 470 mAh. The 2016 Samsung Gear S3 Frontier (pictured above) has a battery capacity of 380 mAh, and the Samsung Gear Sport battery is 300 mAh.

Could it have a more elegant design or a new wild display?
Gear Sport last year brought Samsung's smartwatches into a slimmer, more universally appealing design range instead of the megawatch sensation of the Gear S3. Many reports point to crazy new display ideas that would be very Samsung. The new watch could have a second display in the rotating bezel, indicating additional modes or features. A patent frequently linked to 2017 shows a second-screen curved edge that could offer second readings on the sides, as Samsung's curved edges of OLED Samsung Galaxy and Note phones have had for years .
Samsung's prowess lies in its OLED display technology, and previous smartwatches such as Gear Fit have explored curved displays, which is not out of reach.
A new type of UX, indicated by previous Ice Universe tweets, could come with a new display innovation. At the moment, this seems more like a joker option.
Samsung watches could make calls years before the Apple Watch.

The LTE call should be back
Samsung has made smartwatches phone before everyone, and while Gear Sport from last year has left the feature, it is likely to come back now that Apple Watch S3 has been calling cell for months. Droid Life reports that the LTE will indeed be embedded, but that only one Wi-Fi model will exist as well.
Three Colors, at Least
Black, Silver, Gold: This could be your Samsung Galaxy Watch color options, according to SamMobile. The June report also suggests two different designs, which could turn into Sport and Classic variants, or something similar. (Samsung has had design variations on its watches in the past, especially with the Gear S2 and S3.)
Health features added
Samsung added telemedicine to its Samsung Health Phone app in 2017 via a partnership with Amwell, a US-based telemedicine service. There is a good chance that Samsung's next watch introduces new sensors: perhaps improved heart rate sensors that could aspire to atrial fibrillation or sleep apnea as Apple and Fitbit aim. Perhaps he could measure blood pressure: Samsung's latest Galaxy S9 phones have an experimental sensor for measuring blood pressure in recent months and of rumors more recent suggest a blood pressure detection of some kind on board the next watch.
The Samsung Gear Sport of last year was focused on fitness, with extra water resistance for swimming.

Last year's Gear Sport cost $ 300 (£ 299 or AU $ 499) when it debuted last fall, and the more complete Frontier Gear S3 was priced around $ 350 for the cellular version of 2016. This seems to be a reasonable territory to wait for the next model, with or without an onboard cell.
Looks like it's coming next to Note 9
Recent reports indicate that a new Samsung watch has already been certified in Europe, indicating something imminent. It could be unveiled at the end of August in Berlin at IFA, and not at the next edition of Samsung August. 9 event in New York.
ZDNet's latest South Korea report now states that the Samsung Galaxy Watch will indeed appear with Note 9, and will be on sale at the end of August in anticipation of Apple's Apple Watch reveal and The Google smartwatch fall
It makes perfect sense that Samsung unveils the Galaxy Watch alongside a new phone, especially if new health features built into a Health Mobile Application Update
