Scientists from Alberta find 10 funniest words

EDMONTON – If you've ever wondered why the sound of certain words can make you sniff some milk through your nose or why little boys love to run by shouting some others, do not ask the question.

Two researchers at the University of Alberta say they have analyzed what makes some words inherently fun.

Co-author Chris Westbury says his recent article in the Journal of Experimental Psychology may be the first to explain what makes us lose and to predict which words will bring a smile.

He says that fun words combine two things – sound and meaning.

Words associated with bodily functions, good times, animals, and insults containing "oo" or "kay" sounds that end in e-e are more likely to make you laugh, according to their detailed statistics.

This may seem like a slight search.

But Westbury says that humor is intrinsic to the human being and can even give an advantage in terms of evolution.

The 10 funniest words in a sample of over 45,000? Sit:

Upchuck, Bubby, Boff, Wavy, Yap, Funny, Cooch, Guffaw, Puffball and Jiggly.
