Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo renounced Thursday US citizenship.

According to a statement by Somalia's director of communications, Abdinur Mohamed Ahmed, to the media, Farmanjo renounced his citizenship when the country's constitution allowed for dual citizenship.

"This follows the completion of the required legal and immigration processes that had been initiated after the election of the president," the statement said.

Farmajo spent his formative years in the United States and also worked there.

He returned to Somalia in 2010 where he served as Prime Minister until he was elected the country's ninth president in 2017.

Most of the federal MPs and ministers of the current government would have dual nationality, including the current Prime Minister Hassan Ali, an issue that has sparked debate among many politicians in the country.

The 57-year-old president fought against Al Shabab militia in the country, a threat that has been hanging over Somalia and the Kenyan border for more than a decade.

After the expiry of its mandate in 2020, Somalia is eager to hold its first elections for one person and a vote between 2020 and 2021.
