Tanzania: Prime Minister calls for preservation of cultural heritage

Prime Minister in the Government of the Union, Kassim Majaliwa called on Tanzanians to preserve cultural heritages for the benefit of present and future generations.

He said that Tanzania is still admired Mr. Majaliwa said yesterday while he was in the village of Makunduchi, about 70 kilometers south of Stone Town, where he honored the debut. He stressed that the "authorities" of the Zanzibar government and the Union should work together to ensure that sites and cultures are protected for the social and economic benefits of citizens.

The Prime Minister stated that most of the cultures in the country, such as Mwaka Kogwa, remain important in the tourism sector, as they attract more tourists from abroad and Mr. Majaliwa saw Mwaka Kogwa event before receiving gifts (traditional cut and banana) from Makunduchi village elders, where hundreds of people, including tourists and foreign diplomats, joined the celebration.

Mwaka kogwa Annually celebrated between July and August each year alongside Shirazi Heritage Festival to commemorate Nayrouz – the Persian New Year in Zanzibar.

Historians say that Shirazis were the first non-Africans to settle in Zanzibar and over time their culture was absorbed and brought local names adopted by the native Swahili.
