Mbeya – Three teachers were killed and four others were slightly injured as a result of a car accident in the Mbeya area.
The seven teachers taught at Lupoto High School in Rungwe District.
Mbeya Regional Police Commander Ulrich Matei named David Edwin, Mashaka Mkalafu, who died on the spot, and Robert Mwakasaka, who died at the Mbeya Reference Hospital, where he was taken for treatment.
Mr. Matei named the injured as Happy Sichone, Lameck Sanga, Steven Kahaya and Lazack Lwesya who are being treated at the Kyela District Hospital.
"The accident occurred in the village of Bwato, along the Matema-Kyela highway, Saturday around 18:50. Teachers were returning from Matema Beach, to Lake Nyasa, where they were staying. were made over the weekend, "he added.
"Excessive speed is attributed to a cause of accident.In addition, the driver would be a stranger on a road under construction."
He added that the driver identified as Ambonisye Mwankeja had been arrested after the accident and was currently held in custody at the Kyela police arrest house.
Dr. Mariamu Ngwere, medical officer of Kyela District Hospital, said that the survivors of the accident had been treated and that they were now progressing well.
"They have suffered minor injuries to their body parts and will continue to be treated at the Makandana Rungwe Hospital that their loved ones are living in," he said.
Loema Peter, Rungwe District Executive Director (DED), said: "This is a heavy blow to the people of Rungwe.The death of three teachers is a tremendous grief for the country and families too."
He said two teachers came from the Iringa region, the third in Kyela district and that communications were ongoing with family members for the funeral arrangements.
He added that the last respect should be held at Lupoto Secondary School before the transportation of mortal remains to places of residence for burial.
