At least 20 members of Tanzania's main opposition party, including a deputy, were released on bail Monday after being arrested over the weekend, police said.
Chadema party secretary Vincent Mashinji had previously said that the group was arrested on Saturday for "fomenting unrest", but the police gave no details of the charges.
Mashinji confirmed their release on Monday.
Lawmaker Frank Mwakajoka was arrested in his office in South Tunduma after asking for forms for his party's candidates to participate in partial municipal elections in August, according to the party.
"We do not understand the reasons for this arrest," said Mashinji, adding that the police had arrested "20 other Chadema members who were gathered at a local party office to prepare for the election."
"According to the first information we have, the police are saying that he fomented unrest," he added
Chadema regularly accuses the police of blaming his members, for the purpose of Weaken the party, which denies the Ministry of the Interior.
