The best thing about Samsung's exciting new tablet could also be a fatal flaw – BGR

In recent weeks, a continuous stream of leaks has revealed the new design of Samsung's flagship tablet in 2018, as well as its technical sheet. That is why the Galaxy Tab S4 is the only Samsung tablet that you should consider buying this year, especially if you are looking for a new high end tablet.

The best thing about the new tablet is probably the design. Samsung has reduced the glasses significantly, and eliminated the home button, giving the tablet an all-screen appearance. But that's maybe the worst thing about it.

Samsung does exactly what Apple did with the iPhone X. Well, almost. It's a tablet, not a smartphone. Samsung removes hardware buttons and replaces them with more real estate screen.

But just like the iPhone X, the Galaxy Tab S4 is going Sacrifice the fingerprint sensor, a feature that many people like on a smartphone or tablet.

Apple replaced Touch ID with Face ID, a secure 3D facial recognition system, a first in the industry. Samsung does not have that luxury, though.

In the absence of a 3D front camera, Samsung will use the Intelligent Scan feature that is already available on the Galaxy S9.

If you're not familiar with that, it's a mix between the iris scanner and the facial recognition system that Samsung has been using for years. SamMobile discovered a video of the official Galaxy Tab S4 firmware that is played when you set up Intelligent Scan on the tablet. Here is a picture of this video:

The clip shows that facial recognition can be used to unlock the tablet in bright mode. light, while the iris scan function can take over when the camera is used in the dark.

The new iris / face recognition system should be a convenient way to unlock your tablet. But if you're worried about security and privacy, you can use a password instead. Again, this is not Face ID, so it can not provide the same level of security.

The Galaxy Tab S4 should be unveiled soon, possibly at the beginning of September at IFA 2018.
