Seen as a sign of the impending end by some. For others, it's just an excellent photographic opportunity.
The longest lunar eclipse of the century will take place this month – and it will make the red of the moon blush
Luckily, Mars will appear simultaneously brighter than normal. passes its closest to the Earth for 15 years.
"It's great," said Robert Massey of the Royal Astronomical Society at the Times. "It's a really beautiful and rare opportunity to see a lunar eclipse near Mars in the night sky."
"You will have two brilliant objects of such public interest … it's a great chance for photographers."
The eclipse – which sees the earth pass between the sun and the moon – will last an hour and 43 minutes in total, and will take place on July 27.
It should last so long because the moon is at one of its most distant points on Earth, that is to say that the shadow that the world is projecting on it is larger than in a usual lunar eclipse.

The moon will turn red, meanwhile – rather than disappearing in the dark as one might expect – because of an effect known as Rayleigh Scattering where bands of green and violet light filter in the atmosphere.
