Scientists have discovered a quadrillion tonnes of diamonds, and the good news is that they are here on Earth
or perhaps more specifically, on Earth – and that's the catch . Nobody can reach them.
Researchers in the United States came across the huge reserve by investigating an anomaly in the seismic data. The sound waves that traveled across the Earth as a result of tremors and tsunamis accelerate through parts of the Earth just under the crust. "Measured speeds are faster than we think we can reproduce with reasonable assumptions," said Ulrich Faul, researcher at MIT
"Then we have to say," There is a problem. "C & # 39 so was this project started. "
Crunching numbers brought them to a sparkling discovery – between 1 and 2 percent of the rock under Earth's tectonic plates is pure diamond." 19659007 "This shows that the diamond may not be exotic it is mineral, but on the scale of things [geological] it is relatively common, "said Mr Faul.
Much, much more – 1,000,000,000,000,000 tons, if you write in numbers. That equates to the weight of 3 trillion Boeing 747.
The value of diamonds comes in part because of their rarity, but do not expect engagement rings to be immediately cheaper – the nearest are around 140 km. We can not reach them, but there are still many more diamonds than we had ever imagined before.
The deepest hole ever dug in the world only dropped 12.2 km. It had to be stopped because of temperatures above 180 degrees C.
The researchers say the only way to get the diamonds from hell would be if they are vomited by a volcano.
The research was published in journal Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems .
