Entrepreneurship is seen as a vehicle for growth and aid to poverty reduction in Africa, with women entrepreneurs being the backbone of development instruments and financial inclusion.
However, African women trying to start their own businesses are generally at a disadvantage because of cultural and gender bias and other factors such as limited access to education and finance, as well as than fewer entrepreneurial opportunities.
Fortunately, some African countries are struggling to produce a good number of women entrepreneurs. They have shown that the rise of women's entrepreneurship is not necessarily linked to the pace of wealth and economic development of their country, as shown by the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurship of 2018 (MIWE).
The MIWE program focuses on the progress and achievements of women entrepreneurs or business leaders around the world, focusing on 57 different economies spanning five geographic areas: Asia Pacific, Europe, North America , Latin America, Middle East and Africa.
The weighted index helps to better understand and identify the factors and conditions most conducive to reducing gender disparity among business owners in a given economy. Factors include the results of women's advancement, access to knowledge and financial services, and factors conducive to entrepreneurship.
