Wakiso – The residents of Wakiso District yesterday left celebrations of Heroes Day in celebration when President Museveni announced the paving of a major road network and promised decisive action against land evictions.
The president said that a 65 km road network of Nakawuka-Kasanje-Mpigi, Kisubi-Nakawuka-Nateete, Nakawuka-Mawugulu-Nanziga-Maya, Kasanje-Buwaya and another of Kibuye-Busabala, would be sown. He did not, however, provide any timetable.
"The president gave us hope, but he must have established deadlines for the treatment of these roads," said a resident, who asked not to be named.
However, Allan Ssempebwa, press officer with the Uganda National Roads Authority, recently said the government had already completed the road design.
"We hope this will be done in the 2019/20 budget because, normally, every road we build is budgeted for its construction," said Ssempebwa, without giving details of the figures.
President Museveni also stated that the evictions did not constitute lawless fraud and asked the tenants to resist any attempt to expel them.
Some people said that most of the evictions took place under the surveillance of police and military guards.
President Museveni replied, "Report them to me." Land evictions by landlords are fraudulent and landlords use intimidation to evict [tenants]. Resist [the evictions] and or liaise with leaders to report to me. "
Wakiso is one of the regions most affected by land evictions, the last and almost worst being in Lusanja earlier this year.
Mr. Museveni went to the area and promised measures that people are waiting patiently.
He said land is a very important asset for development and wealth creation.
"The creation of individual wealth is the key and I urge everyone here to manage their own wealth.Commercial agriculture, cottage industries and service sectors such as boda bodas are key interventions," he said. said Mr. Museveni.
He added that for all this to happen, the earth must be available.
He added that roads are an important infrastructure, but a good for the community that, even if they were present, would not increase the incomes of individual households.
