President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday commissioned the sixth group of army cadets who received three years of training to keep the Kenyan army on a par with the best in the world.
In addition to training that primarily involves tactics and physical stamina, newly recruited officers follow the new curriculum that includes academic studies and character development studies leading to a bachelor's degree in military and security studies.
The curriculum is administered by the Kenya Military Academy in partnership with Kenyatta University.
President Uhuru said the training was reorganized to respond to the complex nature of the security problems facing Kenya and the world and that it was designed to train highly competent military officers.
"The program has three components. Professional military training, academic training and character development, "said the president.
Uhuru praised Lanet, Kenya's military academy, for being one of the best military academies in the region and mainland.
He said that Lanet's discipline and respect had enabled Kenyan defense forces to follow the same project at the national and international levels, which has earned him recognition as a well-disciplined force.
The President stated that the training at Lanet had always evolved according to the operational needs of the KDF.
"The continuous review ensures that our military training matches that of other world-class training facilities," he said.
He said the current training program is aware of the new challenges facing Kenya, including cross-border threats such as terrorism and other forms of cross-border criminal activity.
The head of state reaffirmed that the KDF would continue their work in Somalia until the country returns to normal.
"Our defense forces remain committed to their mission of achieving lasting peace and stability in the Horn of Africa with unwavering zeal and determination. And in keeping with this goal and that of the international community, our troops will continue to be part of AMISOM until our goal is achieved, "said the President.
He called on the new officers to maintain the tradition of the Kenya Defense Forces that they are among the best soldiers in the world.
"KDF has a reputation for discipline and respect recognized nationally and internationally," said the president.
As part of the commissioning ceremony, President Uhuru rewarded several officers who excelled in various fields.
The best officer officer award was won by Alaro Ronald Ogutu, while Purity Chemutai Birgen was awarded the second best officer cadet in the same category.
The best officer cadet in professional studies was Simon Mutogo Kamau, while Long'ole Edward was second best.
Maxwell Ndutu Simon is ranked third.
The best character development officer cadet was Pius Mutua, while Musisi Martin Ojuba was awarded the Best Allied Student Officer Award in order of merit.
The prize for the best officer in university studies was won by Kevine Odikoh Saka.
