Unicorns existed, but climate change killed them
New search in Nature Ecology & Evolution reveals that the 7,700-pound hairy rhinoceros, also known as the "Siberian unicorn", still tramped around 39,000 years ago in Eurasia. Palaeontologists previously thought that the animal, which bore a single horn three feet long, was extinct about 200,000 years ago. But a confirmed amino acid extraction procedure Elasmotherium sibiricum lived much later, and that the temperatures that fell during the Pleistocene ice age – and not the proto-human hunters – were at the root of its disappearance. Only five of the 250 known rhinoceros species still exist.
