Digital Foundry is back in the spotlight, this time with an overview of the recent Nintendo Switch exclusive, Octopath Traveler . It is summarized as a hybrid JRPG – combining new and old elements of the genre. The developers Square Enix and Acquire have done a great job of feeling at home among classics and at the same time exercising a modern technical style. Beyond the visuals, sound design is credited for beautifully composed retro tracks, weaving between high quality samples and live instruments.
In terms of resolution, Octopath Traveler runs on a native 1280×720 while the Switch is docked under a TV. Even though the console is set to 1080p, text and UI elements change from 720p. In pocket mode, you get all the same effects but it works at a lower resolution of 1024×576. The user interface also remains fixed at 720p. As for performance, the framerate in both docked and portable mode is locked at 30fps, without a drop, but a few small frame rate issues – especially during battles where the frame time may fluctuate. Fortunately, this does not take anything away from the overall experience
