JOHANNESBURG – The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has stated that it will continue to work for world peace while occupying a seat on the UN Security Council.

South Africa was elected to the council with over 180 votes.

The department also wants to strengthen the role of women in conflict resolution.

Ndivhuwo Mabaya, spokesman for the department, said: "We are still defending the Palestinian people and the Sahrawi people. We are discussing with non-permanent members and permanent members to compare their positions on various issues. South Africa will make it very clear that the Palestinian people must be liberated. "
