Dimuth Karunaratne, with an average of 15.83, played the most recent of his 17 international one-day at the 2015 World Cup

Sri Lanka has ruled out five established players from its World Cup team and appointed Dimuth Karunaratne as captain, while he was not taking part in an international match of one day for four years.

Players Danushka Gunathilaka and Upul Tharanga, drummer Dinesh Chandimal, box guard Niroshan Dickwella and leader Akila Dananjaya are absent.

Dr Karunaratne, the current captain of the test team, replaced Lasith Malinga as ODI's skipper on Wednesday.

Fast bowler Malinga and former captain Angelo Mathews, who had been sacked as captain at the limit of the fleet before the English tour of September, were included in the 15-man squad.

Chandimal took over from Mathews but was dropped for the 5-0 defeat to South Africa in March.

Karunaratne, 30, led Sri Lanka to a Test Series victory against South Africa in February, but was later fined $ 7,500 (£ 5,766) after being charged with drunk driving following an accident in Colombo in March.

The World Cup in England and Wales will start on May 30th. Sri Lanka, winner in 1996, begins its campaign against New Zealand in Cardiff on 1 June.

Drummer Lahiru Thirimanne, versatile bowling spinners Milinda Siriwardana and Jeevan Mendis, and leg spinner Jeffrey Vandersay were recalled.

Thirimanne, Siriwardana and Vandersay have not played ODI since 2017, while Mendis has not played since 2015.

Dickwella was eliminated after three single-digit goals against South Africa, while Kusal Mendis or Kusal Perera are on the verge of taking the gloves.

Drummers Oshada Fernando, Angelo Perera, Priyamal Perera, all-rounder Kamindu Mendis, left-arm brewer Lakshan Sandakan, left-arm welder Vishwa Fernando and fast-thrower Kasun Rajitha were also released after the defeat of the South.

Sri Lanka World Cup: Dimuth Karunaratne (Capt), Avishka Fernando, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis, Kusal Mendis (week), Kusal Perera (week), Thisara Perera, Nuwan Pradeep, Dhananjaya of Silva, Milhan Siriouner Udana, Jeffrey Vandersay.
