North Korean ships trade coal and oil in violation of the sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council.
That's what a Wall Street Journal report released on Tuesday said.
According to a diplomatic source, the UN and the relevant authorities are investigating at least 40 ships and 130 companies for alleged involvement in nearly 200 cases of illegal shipments of coal and refined oil from ship to ship.
The owners of the vessels are not known, but they would be registered in Taiwan and Togo.
According to the newspaper, North Korean ships use a variety of tactics to avoid sanctions, including forgery of documents or deactivation of tracking beacons.
He added that five countries, including the United States, Japan and Australia, were conducting air patrols in Asian waters to monitor illegal ship-to-ship shipments from the North.
