After a four-year break, Quentin Tarantino is back. Ninth feature by the famous director / director, Once upon a time in Hollywood, has just made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in France, and although we will soon have our own full review of the festival, we wanted to gather some of the early reactions of the critics to give you an idea of the reaction of people to his new play d & # 39; era. Take a look below.
Once upon a time in Hollywood the first reactions
I really liked ONCE IN ONE DAY IN HOLLYWOOD # Cannes2019

IT WAS ONCE AGAIN … HOLLYWOOD – Historically dubious, thematically brilliant, QT finds its form in a film that could win the Golden Palm or be chosen by the public, or perhaps both. An exciting, provocative, blackly comical, extremely disturbing masterpiece. # cannes2019

Once upon a time … In Hollywood, it's so gloriously, incredibly indulgent, irresistible and hilarious. The QT movie was born to do. The world is a more colorful place in Quentin Tarantino's twilight zone. Round two, please. # Cannes2019

#OnceUponATimeInHollywood it turns out to be the most tender film of Tarantino. Who would have thunk. # cannes2019

ONCE ON HOLLYWOOD: It's the most personal film of Tarantino's career. You can feel the effect of Manson's murders on a 6 year old QT living in 1969, L.A. # Cannes2019
– Jordan Ruimy @ Cannes (@mrRuimy) May 21, 2019
#OnceUponATimeInHollywood: Quentin Tarantino wants to tell us a story about Hollywood life when the Manson family was murdered in 1969, and dude, did he ever wonder about the WTF? Brad Pitt the standout, his coolest role to date. # Cannes2019 pic.twitter.com/WgJywDPW9i

IT WAS ONCE ONCE … in HOLLYWOOD, it's ridiculous and often careless in the treatment of people who deserve better. But the individual scenes are like nothing and the atmosphere is delicious. A significant improvement on HATEFUL EIGHT. # cannes2019 #OnceUponATimeinHollywood

Once upon a time, in Hollywood, the brilliant comedy Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, where we discover a redemptive version of Manson's nightmare: shocking, striking, dazzling, filmed in the primary colors of celluloid like blue from the sky and the sunset gold. Review later # Cannes2019
– Peter Bradshaw (@ PeterBradshaw1) May 21, 2019
ONCE ON HOLLYWOOD: Like many recent Tarantino, it's baggy, complacent, very fascinating, of a fascinating and ambitious design. Of course, it is accomplished, sometimes dazzling, but it ends up being as random as its last. # Cannes2019
– Tim Grierson (@ Timgrierson) May 21, 2019
Once upon a time in Hollywood: Tarantino established a screaming and explosive counterculture circus. DiCaprio & (especially) Pitt, incredible value under the lights, while evil rushes into the shadows. Some problems, uh, of third act, but the summits of the film are electric # Cannes2019

Aside from the strangely omnipresent idea that Tarantino's latest films were "baggy", which I do not agree with, these reactions are largely positive! Tarantino has always been a divisive filmmaker, and I think there was an ubiquitous fear in the run-up to this film, wondering if he could make a film that could survive the discussion of modern pop culture. It remains to be seen what will be the general reaction to this film, but the fact that many of these reactions focus on the quality of the film's making me understand that we will at least see another piece of work at home. a craftsman at the top of his art.
It has long been known that his new film takes place in 1969 and focuses on a faded actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his best friend / stuntman (Brad Pitt), In addition to Charles Manson and Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie). Through a new Esquire interview with Tarantino and his two main men, we now know some more details about the story and its unfolding. This entire Esquire piece certainly deserves a read because there are many fascinating anecdotes about the characters in the film and some true Hollywood stories involving the actors (example: DiCaprio describes the last time that & He saw Phoenix River the night Phoenix died).
Stay tuned for our comprehensive review. In the meantime, I will be jealously here scratching the walls of my apartment for the next few months because I want to see this movie. now.
Once upon a time in Hollywood opens in theaters on July 26, 2019.
