Target gives employees an additional $ 2 per hour for peak vacation season days

Target said on Tuesday it would pay an additional $ 2 an hour to employees who take shifts during peak days of the holiday season.

The additional pay will go to store and service center employees who work Saturdays and Sundays from November 20 to December 19, Christmas Eve or Boxing Day. Certain head office employees are also eligible, Target said in the announcement posted on its website.

Hourly supply chain workers can get the extra pay during the two-week peak periods between October 10 and December 18, a crucial time to move goods to shelves and packing boxes. The exact time will depend on where the employees are working.

Target’s minimum wage is $ 15 an hour. The company is sweetening the deal and offering even higher wages to vacationing workers, as many retailers struggle to fill jobs and focus on employee retention. Korn Ferry, a talent consulting firm, surveyed 176 U.S. retailers in September to see if companies were having difficulty hiring, and only 2% said it was not a problem.

Target said last month it would cut seasonal hiring and instead give more hours to its approximately 300,000 current employees at the store. It also launched an app that allows workers to take an extra shift on demand, if they prefer a more flexible schedule that they can juggle with babysitting or college classes.
