During the Bills week off in 2017, Deputy Managing Director Joe Schoen was busy out West. He and general manager Brandon Beane share a philosophy that if you have to sign a player in the first four rounds, you feel a lot better if you’ve seen them in person during college season.
Schoen had a full schedule which started this Thursday. He started with training at Stanford, where he saw Bills third-round pick Harrison Phillips. He watched Washington state and Cal play that night before flying to the state of Utah, where Josh Allen was playing for Wyoming in an early Saturday kick to Logan. He then took his rental car and drove to Weber State in Ogden. He wanted to see if Weber State’s undersized cornerback looked as good in person as he did on film. He wanted to get a live preview of Taron Johnson.
“I was glad I did,” Schoen told me in 2018.
