INDIANAPOLIS – Larry Bird loves wall painting, but not tattoos.
A lawyer from the former NBA star asked an artist to remove some tattoos from a large painting representing Bird in a multi-family residence in Indianapolis. Tattoos include two rabbits that mate on the right arm, a cardinal on the cheek and a spider web on the shoulder.
The artist Jules Muck painted Bird in a blue basketball uniform. It's a replica of a 1977 Sports Illustrated cover when he was playing for Indiana State.
Lawyer Gary Sallee says that Bird "must protect" his brand and "does not want to be perceived as a tattooed man".
Sallee told the Indianapolis Star that he expects a compromise in which all tattoos will be removed, with the exception of the word "Indiana" located on his left arm.
Muck added that she adds to her art elements such as tattoos to avoid creating a full copy of a photo and that she tries to reach an agreement with Bird's representatives .
"They said that tattoos are the problem," she told the Star. "I can not make an exact replica of a photo, plus I do not want to, we'll see, it will depend on all we have to do to change it."
