SHANGHAI – Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum will miss at least the next two World Cup games for the US team with a sprained left ankle.
Tatum turned his ankle in the final seconds of the extension of the US team's 93-92 win over Turkey on Tuesday night. He was examined on Wednesday and was declared absent for at least five days. It will be re-evaluated on September 9th.
The United States team faces Japan in its last pool match Thursday. The game has no stake, the United States having already passed the next round and Japan having been eliminated.
The United States will open its second-round match on Saturday in Shenzhen but it is not an elimination match. The first time the Americans could be eliminated, it would be next Monday, when Tatum will be assessed.
Tatum is averaging 10.5 points in two games. He had 11 points and 11 rebounds against Turkey, including free throws against clutches that forced extra time.
